I don’t know ANY nursery rhymes either. So I do 2 things: I learned twinkle twinkle little star, and the rest is all made up on the spot!!
reading: your son is doing what needs to be done, that’s how you “read” a book at that age. Don’t do anything, just let him be. He must use his hands to learn still. Don’t read it, instead point to a monkey and say “look, MONKEY!!” that’s all..
he is too young for nursery rhymes. but yes you can buy a dvd of nursey and make him watch it. he will enjoy it. you will find a good bunch of nursery rhymes at
there are alot of nursery rhymes.
like ABC, twinkle twinkle little star, and ba ba black sheep all have the same tune.
my favorite was always “the itsy bitsy spider”
the itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout,
down came the rain and washed the spider out.
out came the sun and dried up all the rain,
so the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again!
tada!
Well that is normal for your child at this age to not be interested in books mine use to do the same thing as soon as they started preschool they want me to read all the time to them. As for Nursery Rhymes I knew only a few like Mary had a little lamb, 1,2 buckle my shoe and twinkle little star but I didn’t sing them all the time to them once in a while when they got real fussy on me, But when they go to preschool they don’t even do the old nursery rhymes anymore it’s different they have ones that make the little tike’s use there imagination one is about bubble gum. Try this website it might help you
Try board books. You have obviously noticed that he is ripping the pages out of books. Board books are 6-20 page sturdy books made of cardboard. MADE FOR TODDLERS
Try to find board books with photographs of babies. Children’s Book of the Month Club is a GREAT place to purchase such items.
You don’t need to remeber nursery rhymes. Just sing about anything you see or are doing in a made up tune. But do it alot. Its all about repetition. You may find that your toddler will want to read the SAME book OVER and OVER again.
Try your local library for a book of nursery rhymes. Don’t let your child get ahold of it for fear of damage. I would also recommend you BUY board books. They will get ALOT of abuse.
12 month olds have a very limited attention span so trying to jump off your lap during story time is normal. Just try making up a story, talking to him softly as you bathe him, put his pjs on, etc…and then sing softly as you put him down. My twin boys (11 months old) love Baby Mine, Lullaby, and the Winnie the Pooh song.
Baby Mine
Winnie the Pooh
Lullaby (my own made- up version when I could only remember a few words)
Lullaby and good night
Go to sleep little baby
Go to sleep, and you’ll dream
You’ll dream about you and me
Lullaby, lullaby, lullaby and good night
Lullaby, lullaby, go to sleep little baby…
Good luck and sweet dreams!
itsy bitsy spider, hickory dickory doc, humpty dumpty, i wouldn’t worry about the book thing, i mean, he’s only a year old, his attention span isn’t that great.
